AHA
Awards Nominations Open
Nominations
are open for the 2001 Arkansas Hospital Association awards program.
The A. Allen Weintraub Memorial Award, Distinguished Service Award,
and Statesmanship Award will be presented during the Association's
71st Annual Meeting in October. Arkansas' Young Executive of the
Year will be recognized by the Arkansas Healthcare Executives Association.
The Diamond Awards, co-sponsored by the Arkansas Society for Healthcare
Marketing and Public Relations (ASHMPR), will be presented at the
same time.
The
A. Allen Weintraub Memorial Award, named for Allen Weintraub, long-time
administrator of St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center in Little
Rock, is the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the AHA.
Those nominated for this honor should be hospital administrators/CEOs
who are contributing to their hospitals and communities in much
the same manner as did Weintraub.
The
AHA's Distinguished Service Award is presented to individuals who,
while not necessarily AHA members, have promoted a cause of the
healthcare industry, thereby becoming entitled to special recognition.
Examples of those eligible for this award are physicians, nurses,
trustees, auxilians, and other deserving individuals.
The
Statesmanship Award is presented to a legislator or congressman
who has worked diligently on healthcare issues and is, therefore,
entitled to special recognition.
The
2001 recipients of the Weintraub, Distinguished Service, and Statesmanship
Awards will be chosen by the AHA Board of Directors from those nominated
at its August 10 meeting. Nominations, accompanied by documentation
of the nominees' accomplishments, must arrive at AHA headquarters
no later than August 3, 2001. A list of previous award recipients
and award requirements is available by calling the AHA.
The
2001 Diamond Awards will honor outstanding achievement in healthcare
public relations and marketing, and will be presented in several
categories, such as advertising, annual report, Internet Web site,
publications, special video production, and writing. Two Diamond
Awards (for hospitals of 175 beds or less, and those of more than
175 beds) will be presented in each category at the AHA Annual Meeting
Awards Dinner Monday, October 8, in Little Rock. Award recipients
will be chosen from entries received no later than Friday, August
3.
Detailed
nomination information and forms have been mailed to all hospitals.
Additional copies are available from the AHA.

"Reaffirming
Our Commitment to Caring" AHA Annual Meeting and Trade Show,
October 7-9, 2001
The
Arkansas Hospital Association will host its 71st Annual Meeting
and Trade Show October 7-9 in Little Rock's newly remodeled and
enlarged Statehouse Convention Center. The Arkansas Hospital Auxiliary
Association's annual convention will be held at the same time in
the Excelsior Hotel, which is undergoing renovations to become the
Peabody Hotel-Little Rock.
To
accommodate increasing demands on the time of hospital executives
and their administrative team, the AHA's annual meeting has been
streamlined and shortened in length. The Sunday through Tuesday
schedule will feature a golf tournament, learning sessions with
prominent speakers, dedicated time to visit exhibits, a dinner honoring
past AHA chairmen, and the annual awards dinner which will also
include presentation of the 2001 Diamond Awards.
Speakers
scheduled to appear include keynoter Ken Schmidt, former director
of communications for Harley-Davidson Motor Company who tells a
fascinating story of building an entirely new corporate culture,
of rekindling relationships with customers, and reaching out to
new ones in completely untraditional ways; Terry Andrus, president
of East Alabama Medical Center, who steered his hospital towards
becoming one of Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work
For"; and political strategist Mark Allen who returns from
last year's meeting to discuss President Bush's first year in office.
Attorney
Lynda Johnson will present "Mr. Smith's Incredible Journey,"
an entertaining story that describes how HIPAA will affect each
patient as he journeys from hospital admission to discharge; air
safety analyst John Nance will discuss comparisons between airline
safety and patient safety; and author James Bradley (Flags of
Our Fathers) will close the annual meeting with a motivational
message, "Doing the Impossible." ACHE members will also
have the opportunity to attend a post-annual meeting three-hour
Category I workshop on creative management techniques.
Mark
your calendar now for October 7-9, and watch your mail for updates
and registration information.
